Google Just Marked All Your AI Content

Google has a system called SynthID that watermarks every piece of AI content it creates. The watermark is invisible to the human eye, but machines can detect it instantly. It survives screenshots, compression, and cropping.

With a couple of tweaks to make it visible, it looks something like this:

So far, so cool. But if Google can tell the difference between human content and AI content, what do you think they will do with that information?

The answer is not complicated. They will prioritise human content, of course!

This is nothing new. Years ago, Google penalised sites using spintax to generate massive volumes of machine-written content. They built detection tools, ranked those sites lower, and the pattern became clear. We’ve seen this time and time again, when Google figures out how to detect an SEO / content shortcut, they punish it. SynthID is simply the detection infrastructure for the AI era.

You do not need to panic about this, and you also do not need to pretend it is not happening. My message from this is not “stop using AI in your content”. Yet, if you’re relying on AI, you do need to do so strategically.

The creators who will thrive are the ones who use AI mindfully and with a human-in-the-loop editing process that vigorously adds value, not the ones who use it as a replacement for thinking.

Think of AI as a tool that amplifies your process, not one that replaces it. Use it to brainstorm angles, create outlines, and generate first drafts. Use it to handle the heavy lifting of ideation so you can focus on what only you can bring to the table. But the final product needs to be unmistakably yours.

Your voice, your perspective, and your stories are the only things AI cannot replace, and as a result they are the only things that will consistently win in search.

The real difference between a creator who thrives and one who gets left behind is not whether they use AI. It is whether they use AI to amplify their thinking or to replace it entirely.
